Phase separation in confined systems

چکیده
We review the current state of knowledge of phase separation and phase equilibria in porous materials. Our emphasis is on fundamental studies of simple fluids (composed of small, neutral molecules) and well-characterized materials. While theoretical and molecular simulation studies are stressed, we also survey experimental investigations that are fundamental in nature. Following a brief survey of the most useful theoretical and simulation methods, we describe the nature of gas–liquid (capillary condensation), layering, liquid–liquid and freezing/melting transitions. In each case studies for simple pore geometries, and also more complex ones where available, are discussed. While a reasonably good understanding is available for phase equilibria of pure adsorbates in simple pore geometries, there is a need to extend the models to more complex pore geometries that include effects of chemical and geometrical heterogeneity and connectivity. In addition, with the exception of liquid–liquid equilibria, little work has been done so far on phase separation for mixtures in porous media. § Present address: Department of Chemistry, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL 32306-4390, USA. 0034-4885/99/121573+87$90.00 © 1999 IOP Publishing Ltd 1573

Unsteady Numerical Investigations of Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics of Nanofluids in a Confined Jet Using Two-Phase Mixture Model
The development of high-performance thermal systems has increased interest in heat transfer enhancement techniques. The application of additives to heat transfer liquids is one of the noticeable effort to enhance heat transfer. In this paper two-dimensional unsteady incompressible nanofluid flow in a confined jet at the laminar flow regime is numerically investigated. The Mixture model is consi...
متن کاملDevelopment and Application of Aqueous Two-Phase Partition for the Recovery and Separation of Recombinant Phenylalanine Dehydrogenase
Aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) have emerged as a powerful extraction method for the downstream processing of bio-molecules. The aim of this work was to investigate the possibility of utilizing ATPS for the separation of recombinant Bacillus sphaericus phenylalanine dehydrogenase (PheDH). Polyethylene glycol (PEG) and ammonium sulfate systems were selected for our experi...
متن کاملEffect of bilayer flexibility and medium viscosity on separation of liposomes upon stagnation
Liposomes are widely used as drug delivery systems in different forms including osmotic pumps, infusion and IV injection. In spite of these, there is no data available about their behavior under convective flow (e.g. infusion or osmotic pumps) and upon stagnation in such drug delivery systems. As a part of a series of investigations in this area, the present study investigates the effects of vi...
متن کاملGauge cell method for simulation studies of phase transitions in confined systems
A method for Monte Carlo studies of phase equilibrium in confined systems is presented using an example of vapor-liquid equilibrium (capillary condensation and evaporation) in cylindrical pores. The method, named the gauge cell method, allows one to construct the full phase diagram of a confined fluid in the form of a van der Waals loop, which includes stable, metastable, and unstable equilibri...
متن کاملRapid One-Step Separation and Purification of Recombinant Phenylalanine Dehydrogenase in Aqueous Two-Phase Systems
Background: Phenylalanine dehydrogenase (PheDH EC 1.4.1.20) is a NAD+-dependent enzyme that performs the reversible oxidative deamination of L-phenylalanine to phenylpyruvate. It plays an important role in detection and screening of phenylketonuria (PKU) diseases and production of chiral intermediates as well. The main goal of this study was to find a simple and rapid alternative method for pur...
متن کاملEffect of charge on separation of liposomes upon stagnation
Abstract Liposomes are used widely as drug delivery systems in different forms including nanosuspensions, osmotic pumps, infusion pumps and IV injections. Some of these systems (e.g. infusion or osmotic pumps) might stay stagnant for a long time during or before administration, and therefore, might face phase separation. In spite of these, there is no data available about the behavior of lipos...
